Lev Semenovich Vygotsky (1896 –1934) was a Jewish Russian developmental psychologist and the originator of cultural-historical psychology.
His most important contribution was to the field of language and thought. In his book Thinking and Speaking, he established the profound connection between silent inner speech and oral language. He described inner speech as qualitatively different from normal (external) speech.
